Trip to New Hampshire

January 24, 2023

On January 19, 2023, we traveled to another public library located in the New England region of New Hampshire for another presentation. The road turned out to be very long, perhaps it was the fault that our presentation coincided with my sleepless, the weather was not the best, as if it was sleepy like me, we continued on our way to the north, with the background of the song of icy raindrops, unfortunately, I cannot tell you much about the scenery, because the sun is even more intense in the cloudy weather and it quickly hid. Finally, tired from the hard road, we arrived in Keene, New Hampshire, and strangely enough, as soon as I got out of the car, my attention was drawn to the state’s license plates that read: “Live free or die”, this made so many thoughts in my head that I completely forgot about my tiredness and even why I came to a foreign place in the cold and dark. Thoughts threw me in my childhood when my father used to put me and my little brother and taught us patriotic poems of Georgian classic writers, the main content of which was: that even death for freedom is nothing, and it is better to die famously than to live in luxury. The strangest thing is that this little phrase took on a foreign character in me as if the patriotic mood disappeared in the whole world, someone just took it and one day canceled the love of individualism of the motherland.
We entered the assembly hall of the Keene library and started installing the Art installations. Two young employees met us in the hall and helped us organize the technical side. In a few minutes, we started a small performance related to an art installation called ”Civilization”. The physical performance itself was inspired by the comedy show ”Monty Python” and was very noisy and unusual, I will never forget the faces of the local employees, they wanted to hide their amazement but couldn’t, everyone is afraid of difference and noisy speech and everyone avoids it, the expectation is always monotony and comfort zone, But in my opinion, this is exactly the problem of today’s society, that no one wants to give up the comfort zone and everyone wants to adapt their own, to impose on you an opinion that is foreign and unacceptable to you.

Trip to Vermont

December 22, 2022

Yesterday, on December 21, 2022, we at Fermata Arts Foundation were invited to the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, to make a presentation, the city is hidden in the vast forests of the beautiful and still untouched state of Vermont, the nature here is indescribable, and the sky, you think you can even touch it with your hands. The management of the Athenaeum Bob Joly, Director and Becky Hatfield, Youth Services Librarian welcomed us with open arms.
Ms. Hatfield gave us a detailed tour of the historical building with great interest and motivation. As soon as I entered the museum, I felt that I had left North America and, through supernatural power, appeared in Northern Italy of the Middle Ages, everything around was decorated with luxurious ornaments, and the walls were decorated with beautiful paintings made in the Renaissance style. Amazing landscapes of the 19th century American painters were exhibited here and there, all of which created a unique image of Western culture and art, loaded with emotions, we were already invited to the presentation hall. We began to prepare the technical side of the presentation, when I noticed the paintings on the opposite walls, which were done in a simple infantile style, I wondered if, the paintings somehow called me to them, and as soon as I walked to the gallery, I felt like I had returned home and everything had been familiar and close for a long time like I was no longer across the ocean and 12,000 kilometers away from my home. It was like the paintings represented the little spirit of Georgia, everything is simple and infantile like these pictures. I looked at the sketches with tears in my eyes and couldn’t stop smiling. The presentation started in such a way that I could not come to my senses, soon my part of the presentation activity came and I went to the podium.
I started the planned presentation and read the text, and although my thoughts were far from there, the pictures of those Georgian children were still in front of my eyes, at that moment I realized that perhaps the best way to present your country is children’s pictures.
I realized that even if I stood at the tribune for 9 hours, I still wouldn’t be able to convey what these pictures say. Art is a communication between an inanimate object and a human soul, it is difficult to say and explain, but when you feel it and experience it yourself, you will understand everything. I am especially grateful to the Fermata Art Foundation for their initiative to exchange the soul and art between countries, not a single drop of a child’s blood is worth the war. Glory to peace. Glory to peace…

The Stalin episode

When talking about the history of Georgia in the 20th century, we must definitely mention, arguably the most famous Georgian in world history, this person created his era, and he was the ruler of the greatest state of new and recent history, this man is Joseph Stalin.
Stalin was born in the small town of Gori in Georgia on December 21, 1879, his real name is Josep Jugashvili, Stalin is his pseudonym, which was named after him due to his strength of character, Stalin means steel in Russian. Stalin created his image, or cult of personality, which probably resembles the most egregious absolute monarchy, the dictator’s role in history is still relevant.
For part of society, he is associated as the creator of a bloody regime that mercilessly and for no reason killed millions of people in work camps, human life for him and individualism had no price. And for many, he remains a hero to this day, having defeated Nazi Germany and allowed the Soviet Union to stand on the side of the twentieth-century super-state, as Winston Churchill said, He came to the Soviet government with a sickle and left it with a nuclear weapon.
Both opinions are acceptable, because in both opinions there are historical facts and events, although the most interesting and objective is probably the opinion of an ordinary citizen living at the time, who saw the period of his rule, perhaps according to the psychoanalysis of these people we can assume what the Soviet Union was like at that time, I remember my grandmother telling me stories in my childhood, How her family was deported to the desert without any grounds, from the capital of Georgia, simply based on some doubts, my grandmother’s mother and father with 4sisters and brother, found themselves in the desert of middle Kazakhstan, I remember my grandmother telling the hardest stories about their exile, the traumas, that multi family had to endure without all kinds of communication in the wilderness, imagine how strong people were that they still did not lose hope, and despite such misfortune they tried to keep the mood that everything would be fine, but the most interesting and strange thing is that when telling these stories, I did not see anger or disgust towards Stalin, Just imagine how much authority and influence this one simple person had that, his own exiled courageous schoolgirl wrote poems about him and wished him happiness.
What is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is bad, society will probably always argue about it, and everyone will always try to show their truth as a reality.
In my opinion about historical figures, in this case, Stalin, correct or wrong, kind or evil cannot be clarified, the only thing we can boldly talk about historical personalities and events is facts that are neither bad nor good, they simply are.

Knowing the Washington D.C

Yesterday I visited 12/26/2022 I visited Washington, where Fermata Art had to publicly portray an art installation dedicated to the crisis in Eastern Europe and the War of Ukraine. I arrived in Washington in the morning, and although the city was long awake, as soon as I entered the city it felt that buildings and streets had a different function compared to other cities, Buildings of institutions, as far as almost everyone looked the same, and at the same time all buildings differed. People were engaged in their work, everyone was in a hurry in their way, it seemed to me that the population here is more diverse in views and origins, and interests, so for some reason, I seem to have seen something in common between Washington and Old Tbilisi, you know, Tbilisi has been a mecca of diversity in the region since ancient times.
With diversity entering the depths of the city, there is a huge differentiation of social classes that I have not previously encountered in any city, this specifics as confusing as it turned out to be for me, these people live in one physical space in one urban section, and there is such an incomprehensible canyon between them, perhaps it caused a lot of misunderstandings and conflict situations.
On the way to the White House where the Fermata Art installation was installed, I had to walk through several streets of the woman and allow me to assess the visual side of the capital, the design of the buildings in the woman was not the same, they were partly reminiscent of communist brutalism, with its aligned wit-angle roughly standing buildings, and partially buildings with a much-airy aesthetic of Italian-Romantic aesthetics depicting episodic sculptures and of course everyone famous Ethereal Eagle.
The number of people in the vicinity of the White House increased, everyone was moving with their interests, tourists with wide-open eyes tried not to miss any small details, police officers and security guards did not pay little attention to the buildings there, and the architecture they were immersed in their routine and checked people with their eyes, and residents went home or at work, they did not look at anything simply in the void and swim in a sea of thoughts. Among so many people and so many social layers, there was an installation of Fermata in the middle, which seemed to have fallen out of the context of that situation and precisely why it became the attention of people and the police, this small project consists of two parts and a bridge of sentences, phrases and most importantly children’s drawings between the two parts that connect these two thoughts, the project attracted the attention of people soon, simple passers-by came and asked what content this project had, After understanding the word Ukraine, the faces began to be frivolous and cleverly started to squeeze their heads, there were several heartbroken patriot people armed with American and Ukrainian flags, they found it difficult to understand the contents of the installation bridge and resorted to a path of familiar alternative protests. Despite the great attention of the state-run police and a few unfounded warnings, Fermata’s installation managed to send a message to people of different layers of the American capital and social class. I think that solving any crisis conflict, only with long sentences and paintings of children, is made with a bridge that will be covered like a shield on the heads of children and will protect them from the brutality of war and contempt.

Visits in embassies
At the end of 12/30/2022, we visited Washington once again, this time the main goal was to establish active communication with the embassy. As we arrived in the city, we started dealing with the case and the first stop place was the Chinese Embassy, as soon as the building approached, two co-workers dressed in civil uniforms came out and asked us quietly in English what we wanted and what we came to, we explained our goal in detail, although unfortunately they did not understand anything and began to talk in Chinese on the phone, Shortly, thereafter, a well – dressed elderly man came out, politely hanging out who we were and what we wanted. We explained that we wanted to hand over the letter to the ambassador, looked at the letter, went far, came close to the eyes, then went further, removed the glasses, removed the glasses and told us in a smiley face that there was no problem, thanked and we went up.
We decided to come to the embassies of other countries nearby, but soon I became convinced that the people of Washington and representatives of the diplomatic structure, in general, are very locked up, our open, elementary behavior probably was not indistinguishable in the protocol, and because of this, confused and tense with big eyes looked around.
It also came to the turn of the Russian Embassy, when we arrived at the embassy, we were greeted by a Russian dressed in a soldier’s mandir, and for some reason, we started talking in Russian, we responded in English and explained the purpose of our arrival. Of course, he got confused, did not realize, and started taking photos of our beds, then quickly stepped into the building and outside the fence instead, a man came out, came out of the side, and started taking photos of our car from the covered place, and the most comical thing was his disappearance, he noticed our gaze, quickly ran to the other side of the road, stood on the opposite side of the embassy and stood at a stop, soon the bus came and he disappeared as the bus left… Shortly thereafter, the soldier came out to apologize and told us that he could not deliver the letter. We went backward, and eventually, at the end of the day, we went to my homeland, Georgia’s little modest but, proudly standing embassy in Washington. I stood at the embassy and knocked on the doors, Soon afterward, I was allegedly opened by an employee and opened the doors to a small Georgia, the whole embassy was probably preparing for the Georgian New Year, and the alcohol boxes were Elaga on the floor, the room was messed up and the ambassador was in Georgia. I thought I went into my neighbor’s house in Tbilisi to ask for onions for my Georgian New Year dish.
When I left, I thought perhaps no representative of any country would have left the feeling that I had left when visiting the Georgian Embassy, no one could understand the feeling and the vibes that I experienced, so it was an interesting practice, and I probably had an interesting theory about all this: As we say in Georgia, a child is a reflection of parents in the mirror, perhaps the same can be said of the embassy and country, If you want to understand what kind of bureaucratic or general mentality society lives in different countries, be sure to visit that country’s embassy.
